Where to start? Well, when 9/11 happened it changed my thoughts, as it did many Americans. I had lots of thoughts, ideas & fears of what could happen & my children’s futures, but, didn’t start any kind of prepping, just didn’t know what or where to start. About a year afterwards we had a week long power outage & had just had our lil girl. She was born on the 1 year Anniversary of 9/11. We got through just fine, as we cook on the grill, have gravity fed spring water, warmed water to bathe and used lanterns & candles for lighting. Again this raised fears & thoughts in everyone in our area, but yet, I didn’t start preparing or prepping.
Every year we grow a huge garden and up till this past Summer we gave away a lot of our produce & a lot of it would go to waste. We just simple grew more than we could consume. We have a few friends that would bring us canned goods such as, pickles, relishes, fruits & jams and we absolutely loved them. That’s when we thought, “why are we wasting a giving away all this food?” So this past Summer we started canning a lot of our veggies & fruits from our trees, still NOT thinking of any kind of prepping.
The Hubby & friends have always talked of the ‘what if’ scenarios, especially when all the talk came about of removing guns from people’s homes. We have a few friends in law enforcement who said the WILL NOT go to friends & family & ask them to turn over guns; they’d walk off the job first! We live in a very small country town, so, everyone knows everyone & we’re all like a small lil Family here! That was when he/Hubby started ‘preparing’ in that way, with buying more guns & ammo. Don’t worry though,…they were bought for hunting 😉
It wasn’t till the beginning of this year that we really starting paying closer attention to EVERYTHING going on in this Country & around the World. It wasn’t just 1 particular event, it was everything combined; from world events, government, economic, weather, rise in crime, you name it, it was in our heads!
I started VERY small with just grabbing an extra can or two of tuna, pasta sauce or peanut butter, still not fully on board. Just in the past 2 months or so, I/we have REALLY been putting full efforts into everything. Any little bit of extra money I have goes into some canned goods, pasta or something I can can myself. I started going to our local dairy farmers & friends asking them to save their 15 gal. cleaner containers for me, so I can store water. My son’s & Hubby have been in the process of putting wind & solar powers into the works. My 18 y/o gets frustrated/embarrassed sometimes by I think he knows I’m doing what I can to ensure a secure future for them. I recently took on a 2nd job for the extra money of prepping for our Family of 5 plus, another 8-10 Family members. I try to do something daily, which sometimes gets hard working 2 jobs, plus trying to run a household, but, I do anything I can, even if it’s as small as filling a few water jugs. We’re definitely planning for long term so winning one of these prizes would be a Preppers blessing!
‘Because no one else is going to take care of my Family!’
Thank you for this opportunity,

Looking back, I left out so much! As you’re writing your ind is reeling & you just can’t think of everything. As some of the Ladies now, since I’ve started prepping full boar, my now almost 10 y/o daughter is always by my side helping. She gets a kick out of seeing what we save for foods & the watching all the shows and says,”look Mommy, they’re saving food just like us!” She’s fine with it all, but, then does question when I bring home more medical supplies & that’s when she gets nervous 🙁

You are true our families are important

    Robin · April 15, 2012 at 12:29 pm

Without Family what would we have?!? Nothing! Everything else is material, Family is irreplaceable, NOTHING can take the place of them! My children are my world & my parents have always been there for me. This is my way of ‘paying back’ or like the movie ‘Pay it Foward’. I will do whatever is in my power to be sure we’re ok!

My 5th and final vote. Robin has been truely working hard on all of this. Sometimes drives me a little crazy with with all her what if’s she saves and stores but she made a valid point to me a few weeks back. She was saving dryer lint and when I shook my head and laughed she got a little upset and said “WHAT?” I told her our house is going to be stuffed with all these what if’s. She about shoved it in my face and said, “light it!” I said I dont have all day to be putting out a fire in our bathroom I have work in the garage to do. I think here exact words were “Ha, so you do know what its for and I’d rather have a bunch of what ifs than say what now!” I know I’m bias being my wife and all but she has put her heart, soul and every spare minute into preparing our family. So of course my opinion is that she should win.

Lynne Lou · April 15, 2012 at 2:43 pm

Great story! My husband is not 100% on board mostly due to trying to keep his business afloat. I occasionally give him a list of items to buy that I cannot pick up at the grocery store or do not have enough knowledge about ie: generator , rain barrels , tools, ammo, fishing poles & tackle , etc. He is great about buying the items without questioning me =]

Kathy Dean · April 16, 2012 at 10:50 am

Hopefully that beautiful solar oven that’s 1 of the prizes on here, but, we also will be working on a wind turbine, some solar heaters & I’d love to get a few solar panels! My goal,….eventually, to live TOTALLY off the grid!!!

george · April 18, 2012 at 10:23 pm

“Because no one else is going to take care of my Family!”

If only the entitlement crowd believed this we wouldnt be in the deep doo were in today. I think its called “personal responsibility”.

george · April 18, 2012 at 10:25 pm

“The Hubby & friends have always talked of the ‘what if’ scenarios, especially when all the talk came about of removing guns from people’s homes”

If we dont do something soon the lefties will be at our doors with a UN bluehat to help with this task.
