All of our adult lives we insure ourselves. We pay for car insurance, home insurance, life, health, dental and vision insurance. We spend a lot of money on insurance, usually with very little return compared to what we spend on it. Why do we do this? To protect ourselves of course. To protect ourselves, our families and our way of life.
Yet, when it comes to preparing for potential disaster or societal collapse, most people don’t. Most people do not feel the need to insure their own survival should the world, as we know it, end. This is a dangerous attitude to have. The government is not going to be able to help us on a large scale. Remember the Gulf Coast states in the wake of Katrina? Despite the lessons learned then, if it happened again tomorrow, we would see the same level of assistance, or lack thereof.
Consider all of the instability that we have in the world today. Political instability, economic instability, climate instability and geological instability pose real threats. Throw in the threat of a large scale terrorist attack such as a dirty bomb, EMP or, God forbid, a full scale military attack on U.S. soil and the outlook for us becomes pretty bleak. Granted, none of these bad incidents may ever occur, but are you willing to bet your life and the lives of your family on it? I’m not. I also don’t expect my house to catch on fire, but it could. The potential is reasonable enough that I continue to pay my homeowner’s insurance. And that’s why we prep. The potential for disaster is reasonable enough that we should all be prepping. Consider it “Survival Insurance”. Any large disaster has the potential to cut off our food supply, water supply, power and access to assistance. You and your family need to be prepared to feed, water and protect yourselves.
We know firsthand that the thought of prepping in anticipation of becoming mostly self-sufficient is extremely overwhelming. Start small. The first thing we did was to prepare 72-hour packs to keep in our cars. That way, should we not be at home in the event of a disaster, we won’t be caught empty handed. Next we are preparing to be able to feed, water and protect ourselves should we need to shelter in place for one week. We are also planning our bug-out bags in case we can’t stay at home. Once we are prepared for one week, we expand that to one month, then three months, then six. You see the pattern. We are also learning new skills such as canning food and growing a garden. The more survival skills you have also increases your value in the communities that will form in the aftermath of a societal collapse.
As you see, prepping doesn’t have to be overwhelming. A little here and a little there adds up quicker than you might think. There are also tons of free resources online and at your local library to help you. So no more excuses. Get to it. You insure your car, now insure your future. Insure that you survive!

I always seem to use my debit card and hardly ever have any cash on me. If there was an incident and the banks were gone (like Katrina), I would need to have cash when traveling to get gas or any other essentials I might need. Got me thinking….

I like #79 because instead of frightening already frightened people such as myself, SB provides a logical, common-sense approach. The steps are simple and do-able for just about anyone, and practical too, as opposed to “Convert all your assets to gold right now! Build a bunker! Dig up your Confederate great-great-great-great Grandfather’s canon! Go into hiding!”
This one gets my vote.
