I grew up on a farm in the middle of now where Iowa, my Mom made a trip to the big Warehouse Supper market once ever 3 – 4 months were we would proceed to stock up on supplies.  It was just a way of life.
My husband grew up learning to be a survivalist – how to do things the old fashioned way…His Dad believed that if you wanted to build a barn…you go cut down the tree and hand hew the lumber for building…it was just a way of life.
Now married  y husband was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy 10 years ago (They actually only gave him 3 years at most to live, but he fooled them).  Due to this he is unable to work and since he did not die after 3 years disability cut him off…he does do some odd jobs to bring in some money.  Me, well 4 years ago I decided to try to learn how to ride a motorcycle due to climbing gas prices…I felt it would be a great way to save money…well..I wrecked and messed my knee up, until recently I had been unable to walk without assistance, so I ended up on disability. Due to our limited income and  tight budget…  Lucky for us I had grown up with prepping basics and having that 3 – 6 month stock pile saved our lives.   Now we have been working on our stock pile, I would like to increase it to a year supply. We have learned that having a stock pile is not just a nice thing to have, but a Necessity for those unexpected problems that life throws your way….Like I said..
Its a WAY OF LIFE you live, once you start it just makes no sense to stop. How many of you always end up with leftovers in the fridge, well, why not dehydrate them or can them…then they will last for years.  We feel so much better knowing we are throwing out less food and protecting ourselves at the same time.  ITS JUST A WAY OF LIFE!

Love your story and yes stockpiling is good. I do the same thing 😉

Alan Thompson · April 6, 2012 at 11:34 pm

Yes, We have been Preppers (survivalist) all my life. Just the way I was brought up. We now prep for any thing. Good post.

Thank you for sharing your story. You deserve to win a prize. Hang in there!

Heidee · April 12, 2012 at 12:11 am

Thank you Jerrie, glad to hear you stockpile too…its such a smart thing to do these days…Thank you Gloria for your kind words. I think my biggest concern if and/or when SHTF is our health…so I have also started to stockpile medical supplies and medications. I have also collected many books on herbal healing, wilderness medical information, and emergency medical treatment. If there is one thing I have learned its your health is Just as important as food.

I don’t stockpile. I’m the wasteful one. I suppose when the apocalypse comes I will be hanging out with you! lol

    Heidee · April 17, 2012 at 11:09 pm

Now I am going to have to just stockpile more …LOL

Jerrie Jackley · April 17, 2012 at 7:31 pm

So what do you all stockpile and prep? I noticed that you have been starting to can foods. I have stockpile of household stuff, that I get free with couponing, but we have started to talk about stockpiling some foods and water.

    Heidee · April 17, 2012 at 7:37 pm

Food, Water, Medical supplies, Sanitary supplies/household cleaning supplies, amo of course, and some weapons….We decided that with the economy the way it is…one never knows what is around the corner…its better to be prepared for anything than be left standing in the cold hungry and wanting.

Heidee · April 23, 2012 at 9:17 pm

I have been doing alot of canning, and this is the first year we are putting in a garden too, I hope everyone out there realizes that prepping is more important now than ever, with the economy and job situation the way it is. We just had some friends who’s business went under and they just lost their home….Bad things happen to good people all the time…prepare yourself for your own safety.

My Heidee is prepping so good. She caned so much good stuff this last week. We are going to eat so good some day.

Alan Thompson · April 23, 2012 at 9:24 pm

Me & Heidee are starting a garden as well this year. I’m sure she will can some from that as well.

Gail Daniels · April 24, 2012 at 12:23 am

I have been considering doing some of this. I buy some things in bulk and do freeze some things. I used to can with my mom when I was little. We had a HUGE garden and I miss that.

    Heidee · April 24, 2012 at 10:30 pm

Gail….I had NEVER canned before…my Mom was terrified of canners…she heard they blew up all the time. So I had to learn on my own…and I love it!! So many things that would go bad in the fridge or get freezer burnt I now can….I am having so much fun experimenting with it!
I think you should GO FOR IT!! teach your kids, its something that is great for them to learn.

Susan Harrington · April 24, 2012 at 2:57 am

Go girl go! Keep building your stock pile.

Susan Harrington · April 24, 2012 at 3:01 am

I hope you win!! You deserve it!

    Heidee · April 24, 2012 at 10:50 pm

Thank you so much Susan….it would be nice, but I am glad that I have opened some eyes to this at least.
