We have been living off of our food storage since 2009, shortly after President Obama took office.  We faced two layoffs, a job injury, time off to recover from surgery, three more stays in the hospital for a stroke, a heart attack, and memory loss which my husband still suffers from.
While I went to school for dental assisting, I am unable to use those skills as my husband’s memory problems doesn’t allow him to be left alone.  I am constantly refilling my pantry.  Everything we eat, is from our food storage.  We also have items stored for long term, in the event we face a more devastating emergency.
These past three years have been a wake up call for me and my family and the importance of being prepared.  While we don’t have everything we will need in an emergency, we continue to  build where we can as we can.  And I continue to look for “at home” work.  We will have a garden this year which I will can and add to our storage, I coupon, price match and every possible thing I can do to make what we now live on stretch.  We are debt free; our home and our cars are paid for.  While we face a whole new way of living, we could not do it if we had not been prepared.  I practice it because I am LDS and it is my faith and my belief.
This is why we choose to live as a prepared family

If it can be canned, she can can it! Amazed at the things she has tucked away in her cellar.

She even gave solar light sticks to her sons just in case we were to have a blackout and loose electricity. . Now there’s a thought.

My mom is always preparing for something…anything. She is always looking for new ideas for storing food and other necessities. She shows diligence in her efforts to make sure that her AND her family will have the things needed to get through times of need. I am grateful for all that she has done to prepare for all of us.

Chalisa Lynn · April 18, 2012 at 2:00 am

I think that my mom is deserving of any prize that may be awarded to her. She could use a few things to fill up all the shelves in the basement….wink wink <3

Chalisa Lynn · April 18, 2012 at 2:01 am

You can do it!

Chalisa Lynn · April 18, 2012 at 2:02 am
