Which Powdered Milks Are the Best?

Which Powdered Milk Are the Best?

Today, I’m going to give you my reviews on powdered milk. I’ve given you 3 to choose from because you probably don’t need to know the top 10, so to speak. I’ve sampled and reviewed dozens of the non-fat powdered ones.

Understand that non-fat powdered milk is more than just “Milk.”  It’s also mozzarella, ricotta, feta, and cottage cheese in the waiting with just a little TLC on your part. (I cover how easy mozzarella and feta are to make in my “Neanderthals in the Kitchen”  book and ricotta and cottage cheese in my “The Magnificent Pantry” cookbook.) You can also use it in lieu of half and half or cream if you modify the water amount you add to it.

Thrive Life Powdered Milk Review

My #1 favorite tasting brand Thrive Life. It’s now priced at  $8.17 a gallon, prepared, because of an overstock sale. (Thrivelife.com/preparednesspro)  I was a big fan of my #2 favorite now until I got exposed to Thrive Life’s brand. It mixes up SO easy and with no fuss. It doesn’t even need to be cold to be drinkable straight! I like the pantry-sized can I keep in my kitchen so I’m never really “out of milk.” I’ve always got some handy.

Augason Farms (Country Fresh) Powdered Milk Review

My #2 is Augason Farms Country Fresh. It’s priced at $9.99 a gallon, prepared, if you get it through Walmart, $10.99 if through Augason Farms.  (AugasonFarms.com) (or Walmart)  This tastes better cold, but it mixes up easily. I didn’t have to add anything to it and was even able to test it out on others who had NO idea it was powdered milk. They nearly didn’t believe me when I fessed up that that’s what they were drinking.

Warning: If you get this from Walmart, they have the product listed twice on their website. One is priced at $9.99 and the other is priced at $14.98—same product, same size, so be mindful.

Note: Their Morning Moo’s chocolate milk tastes like a melted fudgsicle! It’s so good, but it has corn syrup in the base. Just FYI.

Provident Living Powdered Milk Review

But then there is my #3 choice—that which is from the LDS Church, officially named the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  The LDS Church

Yes, you can make mozzarella cheese from powdered milk

has a robust food order option for long-term stable foods such as wheat, freeze-dried strawberries, flour, oats, beans, dehydrated carrots, onions, apples, and more. Their selection isn’t like other “food storage” stores, but they do the basics very well and they come in #10 cans except for their milk, which comes in mylar pouches.

Their prepared milk comes to just over $3 a gallon, and only costs THREE DOLLARS for shipping, and ANYONE can order from them! (Providentliving.org)  It does have a bit of a powdered milk taste when at room temperature, but no where near the traumatizing taste of my childhood’s powdered milk. Ha!  It does taste better cold, but doesn’t need any vanilla or anything added to it to taste palatable.

Just go to the website, click on “Buy Food Storage Online”, fill your cart, and then check out.  You will be asked to create an account and a member number, but there’s a non-member option as well. So no worries.

All three of the powdered milk choices have long shelf-life of 25 years, but you can’t beat the $3 a gallon option and the $3 shipping through the LDS Church. It doesn’t matter how much you order, the shipping stays at only THREE DOLLARS!

Obviously, powdered milk is a MUST HAVE, along with the water to make it, in your pantry.  According the the Wallaby Food Storage Calculator, a person should have 8 pounds of powdered milk, per person, per month.

Hope you find this helpful!
