DIY mouse repellent

Living in an underground home offers many advantages, from energy efficiency and growing my garden indoors, to natural disaster protection. However, it comes with a unique challenge: rodents. These unwelcome guests can wreak havoc on carefully stored food supplies, threatening years of preparedness efforts. As an avid prepper residing in such a home, I’ve faced this battle head-on, developing a two-pronged approach to protect my stockpile.

My first line of defense was adopting a cat, nature’s time-tested rodent control. While effective, I quickly realized that relying solely on my feline friend wasn’t enough to safeguard my extensive food preparedness items. This led me to create a complementary solution: homemade rodent-repellent sachets.

This DIY repellent combines the power of natural ingredients with the convenience and cleanliness of sachet bags. The recipe is simple yet potent: a mixture of baking soda and corn cob granules infused with peppermint and cinnamon essential oils. These scents are known to repel rodents, while the sachet format allows for easy placement and replacement without the mess of loose granules.

The beauty of this method lies in its simplicity and effectiveness. Unlike loose granules or liquid sprays, these sachets can be easily placed in hard-to-reach areas or hung in storage spaces. They continue to release their rodent-repelling scent for weeks, sometimes even months, crucial in an underground setting where constant vigilance against pests is necessary.

Preparation is straightforward. I mix the dry ingredients in a bowl, add the essential oils ensuring even distribution, and optionally include dried peppermint leaves for an extra potent effect. Once thoroughly mixed, I fill small, breathable fabric bags (like organza bags) with the mixture, creating easy-to-use sachets.

Application is key to its effectiveness. I strategically place these sachets around potential entry points, in corners of storage areas, and near my precious food supplies. The sachets create a scent barrier that rodents are reluctant to cross, all without leaving any residue or mess.

Peppermint and Cinnamon essential oils are natural rodent repellents

This homemade solution has proven to be a game-changer in my underground home. It complements my cat’s natural hunting instincts, providing comprehensive protection for my food stores. As a prepper, peace of mind is invaluable, and knowing that my supplies are safe from tiny invaders allows me to focus on other aspects of preparedness.

Moreover, this method aligns with my self-reliance philosophy. By creating my own rodent repellent sachets, I’ve reduced dependency on commercial products and strengthened my ability to protect my resources using readily available materials. The sachet format also allows for easy refreshing – I can simply open the bags and add more essential oils as needed, and peppermint leaves, extending their useful life.

In the world of preparedness, adaptability is key. My journey from relying solely on a cat to developing a comprehensive, clean, and efficient rodent control strategy exemplifies the prepper’s mindset: always innovating, always improving, and always ready for the challenges that come our way. These homemade rodent repellent sachets are more than just a solution to a pest problem; they’re a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness that define the prepper community.
