DIY Taco Seasoning large batch

I use taco seasoning all the time.  I use it in chili, burritos, and lettuce wraps in addition to tacos. I hate buying the pre-packaged stuff though because of the MSG, thickeners, and dyes and all of the other garbage that exists in it.  Oh, and it’s significantly less expensive! So, making it myself was a big victory for my kitchen! Here’s the recipe I use. It makes 1 cup.  1 cup will do about 8 pounds of hamburger.  You’ll want to add 2 to 2 ½ T. of the mixture to 1/3 cup of water/broth to one pound of chicken, ground turkey or ground beef.  Believe me you’ll like the addition of cinnamon to the mixture. It deepens the flavor. You can omit it though if you’re too chicken to try. Hee hee

You can store this in your spice cabinet just like you would the spices you use to make it with. I store it in a pint jar. I just mix all the ingredients in a bowl and then fill the jar.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup chili powder (I add an additional 2 heaping tablespoons
  • 3 heaping Tablespoons cumin
  • 1 Tablespoon Realsalt
  • 1 Tablespoon finely ground pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder or you can use dried onion flakes
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • If you want to add some kick, add a couple of pinches of red pepper flakes or some cayenne pepper
