Banana Water is great for all your plants

Ever wondered if your garden could look like a lush paradise without spending a fortune on fancy fertilizers? Well, let me share a little secret with you—bananas, those lovable yellow fruits, have a hidden superpower that your plants will thank you for. Of course, this won’t help you in a crisis scenario as I doubt you’ll be finding bananas a plenty, but it will help you in your gardening in the meantime.  I mean, if you’re not going to follow my advice on the Mittleider Gardening Method, you can at least use this one.  Besides, it’s free!

The Banana Water Revelation

Let’s say you’ve just finished a delicious banana, and you’re about to toss the peel into the compost bin. But wait! That humble peel is about to become the star of your gardening show. By soaking banana peels in water, you can create a nutrient-packed elixir that can do wonders for your plants, gardens, and even flowers.

DIY Banana Water: A Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Collect Your Peels: Start saving those banana peels instead of throwing them away. The more you have, the better!
  2. Soak ‘Em: Place the peels in a jar or bucket and cover them with water. Let them soak for at least 24 hours. If you’re feeling extra fancy, let them marinate for up to a week.
  3. Strain and Store: After soaking, strain the liquid into a watering can or spray bottle. Your banana water is ready to go! I continue to keep banana water and just change out the peels as I go through the bananas, which is weekly.

Why Banana Water ROCKS!

So, what’s the big deal about banana water? For starters, it’s packed with essential nutrients like potassium, phosphorus, and calcium—key players in promoting plant growth and health. Our plants nowadays are STARVING for that kind of attention because the soil is so depleted.

Here’s a breakdown of how each nutrient works its magic:

  • Potassium: Helps plants build strong stems and resist disease.
  • Phosphorus: Encourages blooming and root development.
  • Calcium: Strengthens cell walls, helping plants stand tall and robust.

How to Use Banana Water

Using banana water is as easy as pie (banana cream pie, perhaps?). Simply water your plants with it once a week. You can also use it as a foliar spray—just mist it directly onto the leaves for an instant nutrient boost.

My Banana Water Adventures

Daisies thrive with banana water

Let me tell you about the time I turned my sad, droopy daisies into a floral fiesta with banana water. I don’t use the Mittleider method for my flowers. I’m just lazy that way. So it’s not surprise that my poor daisies were on the verge of giving up, but after a few weeks of regular banana water treatments, they perked up like they were ready for a garden party. The leaves turned a vibrant green, and the blooms were bigger and brighter than ever.

You can use this method on houseplants, your garden, etc. It doesn’t work on nieces and nephews though. (Don’t ask how I know that.)

Bananas for the Win

So, next time you snack on a banana, remember that you’re holding the secret to a thriving garden in your hand. Banana water is a simple, cost-effective way to give your plants the nutrients they crave. Plus, it’s a great way to recycle those peels and reduce waste—well, not really reducing your waste, just getting more out of it before you’re done with it. Your garden—and the planet—will thank you.
